Every April there is a special day dedicated to celebrating the planet. Earth Day was first acknowledged in 1970. Beginning in San Francisco, this day of celebration has become a worldwide celebration designed as a reminder of the importance of environmental protection. In the spirit of conservation and environmental awareness, below are five tips for embracing our world.
Demands on energy have increased, which means more searching and burning of fossil fuels. There are various ways to conserve energy and save money. Turning off electronics is important, but it still uses energy. It is more efficient to unplug those that are not in use. Using programmable thermostats, using energy-efficient appliances, and insulating your home will also save resources – including money. Additionally, tankless water heaters can reduce energy cost by heating water only when it is in demand.
Using less water, particularly less hot water, is a great way to lower your bill. Bathing quickly and filling tubs halfway for baths and washing dishes are all great ways to cut down on daily water use. Even an act as simple as turning off the water while brushing your teeth can make a significant difference. For even greater conservation, consider installing a gray water system to recycle water from your home. Installing rain barrels for watering your lawn is also an effective way to minimize use.
Recycle and Reuse
Plenty of recyclable material still ends up in the trash. Not every community offers recycling programs, but there are ways you can reuse products instead of scrapping them. Plastic grocery bags can be used multiple times, for instance. Plastic water bottles can be re-used by filling them with beverages again and again. Look for ways to recycle and reuse outdoor waste, too. For example, let grass clippings remain on the lawn, because they will break down. You can also obtain a compost bin to turn this year’s waste into nutrient rich lawn material next year.
Feeling happy and fulfilled can come from owning less and doing more. Consider making lifestyle changes that will decrease the amount you buy and change how you contribute to the earth’s well-being. Cut the amount of paper you send or receive in the mail by going paperless. Donate old furniture, clothes, or electronics. It can even be fun to learn to make your own clothing. You’ll spend less time and energy caring for items you no longer appreciate. Consider growing your own herbs, vegetables, and fruits, as well.
There is a growing movement encouraging homeowners to plant native flora in their yards. Many decorative plants are pretty, but do not support native wildlife. Planting trees and shrubs can help lower bills in the summer by reducing direct heat to your roof and siding, and planting native species of plants can help bring back dwindling native species. Learn what species are native to your area via online research or a visit to a local nursery.
